Those single events which take several lives are those which cause a great deal of trauma. This topic thread will examine not only the pathology of human thought which conceives and carries out such a crime, but also the aftermath; the trauma inflicted on the survivors and the collateral trauma on their loved ones. Examples include the events of 9-11-2001, Columbine, and more recently Virginia Tech.

VIRGINIA TECH MASSACRE OF 33 STUDENTS Blacksburg, VA (April 17, 2007) - Cho Seung Hui, a 23-year-old resident alien from Korea left confusing clues for the massacre of his fellow students at Virginia Tech. The carnage has become the massacre with the largest body count.
True to the profile, Cho was a loner and had a history of depression. An English major, his bizarre writings won him a referral to mental health. He also had other signs which might have predicted his violent behaviors; such as setting a fire in the dorm and aggressive behavior toward co-eds; more specifically, he was accused of stalking. Earlier in the month, there had been two anonymous bomb threats at the school, but there is no concrete evidence that connects them to Cho.
Prior to this incident, the deadliest shooting was in Killeen, Texas when George Hennard drove his truck into a Luby's Cafeteria, shot 23 and then turned the gun on himself.

CAVEAT: I have modified and condensed the original information to make it more understandable.
This case is synopsis and a template for this type of crime, how evidence is gathered and the historical events recreated. It is hoped that it will be an exemplar for similar crimes. In this particular case, the elusive motive, as in other incidents of mass murder, is also sought. It will be interesting to compare and contrast other crimes of this genre. |

VIRGINIA TECH COPY CAT MASS MURDER THREAT
DC (May 10, 2007) -- A call came at 8:28 a.m. on May 7, in the middle of finals, and was directed to the D.C. 911 Call Center. The caller threatened to commit mass murder at the ICC building at Georgetown University and advised that they should "take him very seriously." The caller sounded male.
The call was considered a hoax, perhaps from an overly anxious student, taking advantage of the recent Virginia Tech slayings.

This case is only a synopsis and appears sketchy. We will follow this case and add information as it becomes available. It is hoped that it will be an exemplar for similar crimes and is important because it capitalizes on other similar crimes. This is often call "copy cat crime." It will be interesting to compare and contrast other crimes of this genre. |

Nurse's Aide/Arsonist Set Calderón Guardia Hospital Ablaze Killing 19
San José, Costa Rica
Juan Carlos Ledezma Sánchez, a nurse's aide, torched the Calderón Guardia Hospital in the heart of San José on July 12, 2005. The blaze destroyed the top two floors of the hospital and took the lives of 19 people; 3 hospital workers and 16 patients. The surgical recovery wing was the site of the catastrophe.
Juan Carlos Ledezma Sánchez received a sentence of 50 years by a lower court, but since arson only carries a sentence of 20 years his sentence was reduced. This has resulted in several lawsuits against the hospital for failure to protect its patients.
